What's a MUSH?

Wikipedia: MUSH. That's the easy, if sometimes complicated, answer.

You create a character. You play scenes as your character with other characters. Major and minor storylines and plots take place. Basically, you're simply role-playing online, and the MUSH -- or multi-user shared habitat/hallucination -- is the medium for it. Basically, it's written improvisational theater.

How is a MUSH the same as a chat?

To put this in terms that chat players can easily understand:

The role play is pretty much the same as you might be used to on chats, w/ actions done via posts (which we call "poses"). There's no learning curve there: You know it right off the bat if you've done it on Digichat, Jove or SEAChat.

MUSHes focus heavily on good stories and writing. They have an automatic transcript feature called "logging." It means by clicking one button, you can save every scene.

What makes a MUSH different?

It starts w/ a simple download. You download what's called a "client" for free. One of the most common and user-friendly is SimpleMU.

Each MUSH works through Telnet, with a unique Telnet address. The client replaces that and gives you a better, more user-friendly setup than mere Telnet. You simply open the Client, connect to your address, and you're in.

Every MUSH is essentially an entire world. Once you're logged on, every room description is already there. Unlike chats, they don't have a small number of general rooms. You can have anywhere from dozens to hundreds. They're very easy to navigate. When in trouble, there's a MUSH-wide IM and chat system where you can ask anyone for help.

All the Help & Setting files are contained within the MUSH (and in some cases, online as well). Many are incredibly detailed.

Most dice systems are encoded into the MUSH. That means you don't always need a Moderator to settle In Character conflict.

Each MUSH has numerous features based off of text commands. For the most part, you need to know about 3 or 4 of them, and they're easy to remember. For example, to speak out loud, it's as simple as typing a quotation mark and then what you want to say.

MUSH players tend to be pretty helpful with commands. If you're stuck, you can always type: HELP.

How to Connect to Haunted Memories

Once you install SimpleMU, drop down the File menu and select New Connection Wizard. You'll then be prompted for the site address, port and a name you choose to label this connection. The address is haunted-memories.net, and the port is 3010. The site name is up to you.

Completing this will automatically connect you to the MUSH.

You can log in as a Guest by following the directions in the welcome message (i.e. Type "connect guest guest"). You'll be dropped automatically on to the Guests channel, on which you'll be able to talk to other players (as if you'd all tuned into the same channel on a CB radio). To speak on the channel, type "g <what you want to say>".

You may also create a character right away by following the directions in the welcome message (i.e. Type "connect <character name> <password>"). You can do names with a space but it is recommended against. If you are having trouble finding a name that seems available, you can log in as a guest and check for names before trying to create. New characters will be automatically added to the CharGen channel. To speak on the channel, type "cg <what you want to say>".

Once you get to this point, things will become self-explanatory, as you see how to create your character and find different information within the game.

How to Explore the MUSH's content

Upon logging in, type +BEGINNER for the basic commands.

Type +NEWS or +THEME to view content throughout the MUSH.

For help, type Help or +Help.

You can also check out the supernatural spheres by typing +VAMPIRE, +WEREWOLF, or +MAGE.

Much of the setting information is also available on the web site at http://www.haunted-memories.net.

How to Create a Character

Remember the welcome screen you saw before you logged in as a guest? Log out and go back there. That screen explains how to create your character. It's simple. Once you log in with your new character, you'll be dropped into the OOC room again. Enter the Chargn <CG> entrance by typing: CG. You'll then be directed into the automated and very self-explanatory character creation process. You'll build your character sheet. You'll store your background on the MUSH. And then you're in.
