Changeling: the Lost
ChangelingSkull.png

What you need to remember is, Entzweite Erinnerungen was here before you were, and it'll be here after. Nobody knows how old the Freehold is; we don't call it Broken Memories for fun. Nobody remembers before the '50s at all, and half the new people haven't even heard of the Night of the Lost yet. What we don't remember can hurt us, and it will, just like if you're stupid enough to let it the Danube will drag you down.

The Courts are broken. Spring and Summer try to put their houses back in order, and slip back to infighting every time they seem to be on the verge of success; Autumn and Winter hold the reins, and drive people to live scattered and separated and afraid, either to hold off another hammerblow like the Night or just to keep hold of power themselves. Hobgoblins and Hedge-things intrude into the center of the city. The Gentry steal people right out of the Goblin Market. They might have help from inside the freehold. Or we might be so fractured that they don't need the help anymore. We don't know. We don't know anything. And that's what can hurt us most of all.

Rules and System

Like all games adapted for play in a MU* setting, from time to time we run across something that requires further clarification or a rule that needs tweaking in an attempt to make the game flow more smoothly, especially with respect to the other spheres on Haunted Memories. In such cases, those will be collected here for easy reference.

Mirror Mirror

When the great traveling Goblin Market last came to town, several changelings took it upon themselves to rescue a mortal girl who was being sold. In the process of this intrepid rescue, Baron ‘happened upon’ an interesting artifact. With the aid of his motley, and in particular Viktoria, Autumn’s Das Opfer, Viktoria’s knowledge of the occult led them to a strange house on the edge of the city filled with sleeping little girls and mirrors and any number of unanswered questions. Braving The Marches

The Marcher Lords are changelings, after a fashion, but ones that have given themselves over to both a cause and the hedge totally, even to the point of madness. They dwell on the edge of the Hedge and Arcadia as companies of soldiers, utterly fixated on the daunting task of trying to keep Them from venturing beyond the borders of Arcadia, where they can do more harm. They would certainly be heroes, were they not so focused on their task that, like the things they fight, they are given to kidnapping any stray Lost that happen across their path and forcing them by swordpoint to serve in their army. And the thorns that seem to grow out of their skin, and maybe even their souls... those are disturbing. Cazador, the one armed Summer Serpent King that was once King of Summer, fought with the Marcher Lords for a time... but does he still? And if not, why not? These questions are suddenly important, as the Marcher Lords have recently retreated from the Arcadian Border, having been routed by a Queen of Ice. Something doubly dangerous for the Changelings of Vienna, as it means that they’re close at hand to replenish their ranks with more kidnappings while leaving the border and trods they once protected wide open to anything that felt inclined to venture forth. The Fatebound Market

The Changelings of Vienna have become accustomed to braving the thorns of the hedge to conduct their business. From the smaller local Scarborough Faire, with its familiar yet utterly amoral resident hobgoblins, to the heady dangers and potential riches of the great floating market, the hedge is the place where Viennese Changelings go to do their deals.

Not all markets are situated in the thorns though. It could very well be that, in some abandoned warehouse somewhere in a seedy quarter of town, rogue changelings and things that have no business being in this world at are sell dusty trinkets and treasure out of their 1976 Volkswagen bus. It would be easy to think that if one could just secure an invitation it would be so much safer to strike a bargain without the looming threat of the hedge close at hand or the very real danger of Their arriving to inspect the wares on offer. Easy, but potentially misleading, if one fails to consider what sort of market could be so dangerous that it would be unwelcome even to the unscrupulous denizens of the hedge. Joining the Sphere

Storytelling in the Changeling sphere focuses on the concept of the Lost desperately struggling for a safe structure in which they can survive against the dangers presented by their ties to Arcadia. On Haunted-Memories: Vienna by Night, the primary political elements of changeling revolve around the Freehold of Entzweite Erinnerungen and the Motleys which support it. Players who wish to join the Changeling game will be expected to be able to participate in the Freehold and their own Motley. Loyalty to the Freehold and the Courts over other connections is extremely important in Vienna, where the Courts have traditionally out-of-balance and unwilling to compromise with each other outside of violent events. Changeling: the Lost stresses trying to unearth mysteries of Arcadia and the Freehold itself while retaining a semblance of order while the Courts continue to fall apart.

Presently, the Changeling sphere is OPEN for new applications by players with currently approved characters in the game. There is a limit of 5 openings; please use +REQUEST to submit a concept. See +bbread 1 in game for details.

As always, players with no currently approved characters in the game may submit an application for a character.

Enchanted Mortals are CLOSED, with limitations and on a trial basis. You need to seek staff approval prior to going through chargen, and this is limited to 5 Enchanted Mortals in total.

Theme and Society

In some ways, the Freehold of Divided Memories has come a long way in the past several years, restoring a semblance of balance to its four seasonal courts after Autumn and Winter’s hegemony succeeded an equal imbalance of Spring and Summer. But in many ways, Vienna’s Changelings are still defined by the long ago massacre known as the ‘Night of Long Knives’ where dozens and dozens of changelings died under mysterious circumstances and Spring’s stranglehold on political power met a bloody end.

None of the freehold’s former powers remain intact: Nimah, the mad Queen of Spring replaced more than a year ago, while Summer’s old monarchs are either dead, in the case of the secret Loyalist Der Erhabene, or having wandered off into the hedge as happened with Tolltaker Cazador. Fittingly, Winter and Autumn fell as one, as Het Witte Meisje, Winter’s seemingly unassailable string-puller having been slain by an unknown foe on the same day that the Autumn crown went to someone other than the famed and reclusive Black Scarecrow. On the face of things, it would seem like a new beginning, but recent events make it seem as if old enemies have returned to plague Entweite Erinnerugen.
