Changeling: the Lost

What you need to remember is, Entzweite Erinnerungen was here before you were, and it'll be here after. Nobody knows how old the Freehold is; we don't call it Broken Memories for fun. Nobody remembers before the '50s at all, and half the new people haven't even heard of the Night of the Lost yet. What we don't remember can hurt us, and it will, just like if you're stupid enough to let it the Danube will drag you down.

The Courts are broken. Spring and Summer try to put their houses back in order, and slip back to infighting every time they seem to be on the verge of success; Autumn and Winter hold the reins, and drive people to live scattered and separated and afraid, either to hold off another hammerblow like the Night or just to keep hold of power themselves. Hobgoblins and Hedge-things intrude into the center of the city. The Gentry steal people right out of the Goblin Market. They might have help from inside the freehold. Or we might be so fractured that they don't need the help anymore. We don't know. We don't know anything. And that's what can hurt us most of all.

Rules and System

Like all games adapted for play in a MU* setting, from time to time we run across something that requires further clarification or a rule that needs tweaking in an attempt to make the game flow more smoothly, especially with respect to the other spheres on Haunted Memories. In such cases, those will be collected here for easy reference.

The Devil's Due

The handing of the Crown from Spring to Summer proved eventful, not only because [Konrad] challenged the reigning king [Jeder] for leadership of the court, but because soon thereafter the whole event was beset by enormous shadow bears bent on eating the attendees. In the end, the bears were defeated handily by the changelings, but during the course of the impromptu battle the mad dowager Queen of Spring, Niamh, was apparently kidnapped. Gossip about the freehold says that this is in some way connected to the infamous Night of Iron Knives, which also happened on the eve of Summer turning to Spring. Some say the parties involved left a note. A number of Summers went through the door that the bears came out of into the hedge. [Jeder], [Amaranth], [Jackson] and [Gunther] all rushed off to check on Niamh. Quite a few people had been seen visiting the invalid queen during the weeks and months beforehand too. Like [Josef], who’s charity received a mysterious unmarked letter asking him to grant her last dying wish, even though there was no indication she was ill beyond the obvious. Did they sense some hint of danger, or did they have other reasons for seeking out the now missing Niamh?

The Black Pieces

What began as a few isolated skirmishes with a strange assortment of chess-themed hobgoblins and changelings in the hedge soon turned into a full-fledged battle. After harrying a group of these creatures during Autumn’s Hunt of Leaves, it soon became apparent that there was not merely one army, but sixteen of the: one for each side’s chess piece on a board. After being forewarned by a group of hobgoblins who a roving army had attempted to press into service, Vienna’s lost laid a counter-ambush for them just outside Rabeneck. The battle was a complete route on the side of the changelings, with two of the sixteen armies either destroyed or disbursed. Of the prisoners taken, the Kings and Queens of the Pawn and Knight armies have chosen to remain in Vienna, claiming to remember little to nothing of before they were taken. One bishop was executed beneath Rabeneck’s great ash tree, his spilled blood breathing new life into it. But since the battle of Rabeneck, the rest of the Army has proved elusive. Word has come that the same armies have all but sacked Prague and the outpost of the Margravate of the Brim, but not a trace has been seen of them lately in Vienna’s hedge. Could it be that they’ve given up, or are they merely biding their time?

All Aboard!

A new train line seems to have arrived at the Station to Nowhere. Considering where it’s likely to have arrived from, the general feeling is that this cannot be a good thing.

And More!

As if that weren’t enough, other things seem to be afoot in Vienna. Isabella noted a strange presence in her bakery late one night that retreated to a dark closet and left it smelling of marsh and bog. The ‘Make a Wish’ charity that Josef received a letter asking him to answer a dying woman’s request, and led him to the mad former Queen of Spring, Nimah. Strange little footprints in the snow outside Amaranth’s window led her to a door but not to answers. Are these things merely isolated incidents, or is there some connection here that has yet to come to light?

Joining the Sphere

Storytelling in the Changeling sphere focuses on the concept of the Lost desperately struggling for a safe structure in which they can survive against the dangers presented by their ties to Arcadia. On Haunted-Memories: Vienna by Night, the primary political elements of changeling revolve around the Freehold of Entzweite Erinnerungen and the Motleys which support it. Players who wish to join the Changeling game will be expected to be able to participate in the Freehold and their own Motley. Loyalty to the Freehold and the Courts over other connections is extremely important in Vienna, where the Courts have traditionally out-of-balance and unwilling to compromise with each other outside of violent events. Changeling: the Lost stresses trying to unearth mysteries of Arcadia and the Freehold itself while retaining a semblance of order while the Courts continue to fall apart.

Presently, the Changeling sphere is CLOSED for new applications. See +bbread 1 in game for details.

Theme and Society

In some ways, the Freehold of Divided Memories has come a long way in the past several years, restoring a semblance of balance to its four seasonal courts after Autumn and Winter’s hegemony succeeded an equal imbalance of Spring and Summer. But in many ways, Vienna’s Changelings are still defined by the long ago massacre known as the ‘Night of Long Knives’ where dozens and dozens of changelings died under mysterious circumstances and Spring’s stranglehold on political power met a bloody end.

None of the freehold’s former powers remain intact: Nimah, the mad Queen of Spring replaced more than a year ago, while Summer’s old monarchs are either dead, in the case of the secret Loyalist Der Erhabene, or having wandered off into the hedge as happened with Tolltaker Cazador. Fittingly, Winter and Autumn fell as one, as Het Witte Meisje, Winter’s seemingly unassailable string-puller having been slain by an unknown foe on the same day that the Autumn crown went to someone other than the famed and reclusive Black Scarecrow. On the face of things, it would seem like a new beginning, but recent events make it seem as if old enemies have returned to plague Entweite Erinnerugen.
